New South Wales fire map

The detailed and highly accurate New South Wales Bushfires Community Map was made available online during the 2013 bushfire season, keeping the public informed about evacuation centres, emergency alerts and the status of fires across the region.

The interactive fire map included warnings, incident updates, community meeting notifications, road closures and air quality - data sourced from the NSW Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, as well as other government agencies.

The map also featured real-time social media updates with geo-located photographs, and videos and comments from Twitter and Instagram - providing an eyewitness account of what was happening in affected areas. In addition, members of the public could contribute to the fire map by using fire-related hashtags.

Esri Australia technical specialist Gary Johnson, and a team of Australian developers, worked with US disaster response experts to quickly create the online map - so the community could have key emergency information at their fingertips.

Similar data mapping solutions were also used to assist with emergency response during the 2011 Brisbane floods.
